Eight best things to do in Acadia National Park

Maine’s Acadia National Park is one of the most popular national parks in the US. With all its natural beauty, small-town charm, and opportunities for adventure, it’s no wonder. Located on Mount Desert Island, Acadia will awaken your senses, whether you take a summer dip in the Atlantic or visit during the breathtaking fall season.

1. Drive down Park Loop Road

Address: Park Loop Rd, Maine, United States

The Parque Nacional Acadia Maine attracts over 2 million visitors annually. Its perennial popularity is fueled by the beautiful accessibility of its most prominent landscapes. Most can see without venturing far from your car when driving the 27-mile Park Loop Road.

It may seem like a short stretch, but exploring the attractions along this winding road can take up most of the day. Acadia National Park is a photographer’s dream; stop and shoot at iconic attractions like the majestic Otter Cliffs and Thunder Hole, where water sprays 40 feet into the air when the tides are good.

The Park Loop Road is open April 15 – December 1, weather permitting. Pick up a map at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center when you enter the park, or download a map of Acadia from the National Park Service website.

Cruise ship passengers and other car-free travelers wishing to visit Acadia National Park can take advantage of the free Island Explorer bus. Which departs from the Hulls Cove Visitor Center every half hour from late June through Columbus Day stops at attractions. Critical along The Loop Park Trail.

2. Get your feet wet on the sandy beach.

Address: Sand Beach, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, USA.

Sand Beach is a mandatory detour in Acadia National Park. Try to arrive early in the morning on summer days; otherwise, you may have a hard time finding a parking space. Even when temperatures rise in July and August, the Atlantic Ocean remains extremely cold in the far north. But this beach of crushed shells is one of the most impressive you have ever seen.

Surfing in waters that never get much hotter than 55 degrees Fahrenheit may be out of the question, but you’ll at least want to get your feet wet. Acadia’s uniqueness lies in the abrupt way land and sea collide, and you’ll remember standing at the intersection and feeling your toes tingle.

3. Take a horse-drawn carriage ride.

Address: 21 Dane Farm Rd, Seal Harbor, ME 04675, USA.

Telephone: +1 207-276-5721

John D. Rockefeller Jr. gave the public a great gift when he donated 10,000 acres of land on Mount Desert Island, including 57 miles of carriage roads that he developed and cherished, to the National Park Service. A favorite experience in Acadia National Park is embarking from Wildwood Stables in a chariot drawn by sturdy Belgian draft horses or Percherons for a tour of these broken stone roads, which took more than 25 years to build.

The Rockefeller carriage road network is a feat of engineering. You’ll see stone walls and some of the 17 stone bridges your crew built, and marvel at the views as a team of horses hit the curves along cliffs. It’s just the right speed to savor Acadia and appreciate the foresight of those who strove to preserve these lands.

Carriages of Acadia operates one- or two-hour narrated sightseeing tours, which take visitors into the forested interior of Acadia. Private transportation charters are also available.

Carriage rides are available from late May to late October. Reservations are highly recommended.

4. Dining at Jordan Pond House

Address: 2928 Park Loop Rd, Seal Harbor, ME 04675, USA.

Telephone: +1 207-276-3316

Dining by Jordan Pond with a view of two gently rounded mountains known as “The Bubbles” has been a tradition for over a century. You simply cannot leave Acadia National Park without experiencing a meal in this eye-pleasing environment.

Jordan Pond House, the restaurant within the park, is operated by Ortega Family Enterprises. The company upholds Jordan Pond House traditions, including afternoon tea served with signature popovers with jam.

Make reservations in advance to minimize waiting time for lunch, tea, or dinner.

5. Chat with a park ranger

Address: 25 Visitor Center Rd, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, USA.

Telephone: +1 207-288-3338

Throughout Acadia, rangers are available to answer your questions and point out things you might otherwise miss. If you have children, stop by the Hulls Cove Visitor Center to learn about the Acadia Junior Ranger Program. By completing a series of activities, including interviewing a park, kids can earn an official Acadia Junior Ranger patch – the perfect keepsake.

6. Enjoy the view from the top of Cadillac Mountain.

Address: Bar Harbor, ME 04609, USA.

Best time to visit Acadia national park

The summit of Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the east coast. If you’re ambitious, you can hike the 2.2-mile North Ridge Trail to the top, about 1,530 feet above sea level. Fortunately for visitors who don’t have hours to spend or the stamina to climb, a 7-mile trail to the summit has made 360-degree views from this seaside peak accessible to motorists since 1931.

Spend the time you did not spend walking to enjoy the surroundings:

  • The pink granite slopes
  • The towering birds
  • The pines
  • The rare subalpine vegetation

Cadillac Mountain is one of three places in Maine that are the first to see the light of sunrise in the United States, making it a popular place to watch the sunrise. Even if you’re not a morning person, experiencing the sunrise atop Cadillac Mountain should be on your bucket list.

7. Discover Acadia in winter

Parts of Acadia National Park remain open in winter, even when it has snowed. Most of Park Loop Road is closed in winter, but two sections are generally available: Ocean Drive and Jordan Pond Road. It is beautiful to visit the park and get a completely different view of the park and the bay.

Public roads that travel along park boundaries that are cleared can also use to access parts of the park. You can hike (with winter gear), cross country ski, snowmobile, ice fish, and winter camping in the park if you have the equipment.

8. Take a boat tour

While in Acadia National Park, you will undoubtedly see the islands and bays from the shoreline. But actually, it can reach those areas through cruise guided by rangers offered to:

  • Baker Island: This 5-hour cruise with 1.5 hours actually on the island will allow you to visit historic farms and the lighthouse and learn about the island’s geology. Cruises depart from Harbor Place in Bar Harbor.
  • Frenchman Bay – You’ll cruise Frenchman Bay on a four-masted schooner in search of local wildlife and learning area history. The 2-hour cruise departs from the Bar Harbor Inn Pier.
  • Somes Sound – Islesford’s Scenic Historic Cruise takes you on a cruise on the sound and includes a visit to the Islesford Historical Museum on Little Cranberry Island. The cruise departs from the municipal dock in Northeast Harbor.
